4 Quick Steps to End Procrastination
There is no such thing as healthy procrastination and to help understand why people do procrastinate, let’s get to the root of the issue. At its root, procrastination is based in emotions such as fear, anxiety and lack of confidence. People fear completing a task because they are either afraid of the task itself or the outcome – and so they postponed it until they can no longer avoid it. This act, in itself, only adds to their level of fear and anxiety – causing further procrastination. So how do you end procrastination?
Just DO IT.
DETERMINE – Identify, specifically, what is causing the fear or anxiety. What is it that you are really afraid of? Fear of failure? Fear that you’re not smart enough? Fear of disappointing someone? Once you identify the source of the fear, you can address it and resolve it. This is not about gaining someone’s approval – and you’re not being graded as a success or failure.
OUTLINE – Come up with an easy to follow step-by-step plan that outlines each step to completing the task. Take it one step at a time. When you’ve completed a step, go back to your list and cross it off. This provides more confidence for completing the next task.
INTEND – Your intention going into the task will largely determine the level of your fear and anxiety. Remember, you can do anything you set your mind to – so intend that you CAN and WILL complete it successfully.
TACKLE – Do not procrastinate any further. You must tackle the task immediately. Do not make any more excuses, over-analyze, or talk yourself out of it. Start with step one on your outline and get moving!
The Just DO IT (Determine – Outline – Intend – Tackle) system allows you to understand the root of your fear, so you can address it – and correct it. This not only reduces procrastination, but it relieves the fear and anxiety. Moreover, when anxiety no longer occupies your energy, you can focus on the goal at hand and accomplish it with confidence, peace of mind and ease.
